Located in Nassau County Florida at the intersection of US 301 and County Roads 200 and 23 is the city of Callahan. Callahan is just 20 miles northwest of Jacksonville Florida and just 15 miles from the Jacksonville International Airport. The city was developed as a result of the construction of the Florida Railroad from Fernandina Beach to Cedar Key.

The town was named after Daniel Callahan and his workers, they arrived at the town in 1856. They were hired by the railroad company to construct bridges and road beds ahead of the crews laying rail and ties. Once Callahan and his crew arrived the sleepy little settlement was transformed into a busy rail camp.

Callahan was a busy crossroads for commerce when the Civil War started in 1861. Many residents of Callahan arrived from Fernandina Beach after the North attacked the port city. The port city was attacked to keep overseas supplies out of the hands of the southerners.

Today, there is no passenger or freight train traffic through the city of Callahan. The busy CSX main line west of downtown remains a testament to the historic importance of the railroad to Callahan.

Callahan FL is home to the Deerfield Lakes Golf Course, it is an 18 hole over 6,656 yards with a par of 72. The course is located less than 10 miles from the Jacksonville International Airport. The course has well maintained fairways and greens, and the greens are medium in size. The fairways are average in width and most are lined with water. Actually out of the 18 holes on the course 16 have a water hazard on them. To make the course even more challenging bunkers are placed strategically throughout the course.

Its proximity to Jacksonville and the Amelia Island, makes Callahan a great place to live for golfers. Golfers can not only play on the local course but with a short drive they can play the world class golf resorts in the Amelia Island area.
