Saint Augustine Beach Florida is a coastal city in St. Johns County, Florida. Until the middle of the 18th century, the Saint Augustine Beach area was used as pasture land for cattle and quarries for coquina. The Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine was built of coquina. The coquina's porosity turned out to make it an ideal material for the walls of the fort. Cannon balls failed to shatter the coquina and were absorbed into the rock, much as jabbing a tool into Styrofoam results in holes but not in breakage of the Styrofoam. The coquina walls absorbed projectiles rather than deflecting them, providing a surprisingly long-lived fortress that survived numerous attacks. Today, at an age of over 300 years, it is North America's oldest masonry fort.

In 1730, a businessman from New York by the name of Jessie Fish claimed the coastal land south of the lighthouse and established the local citrus industry. The Fish family cultivated this land until the 1820's. In the 1880's, St. Augustine Beach was called South Beach. The transportation from St. Augustine was provided via the South Beach Railroad.

In 1920, the first hotels in Saint Augustine Beach brought tourists who enjoyed the pastoral escape from formal Saint Augustine. There were no paved roads, the only way to travel was over the dunes or to drive on the beach. The history of Saint Augustine Beach is closely tied to the history of early exploration in North America. The settlements of the French, British and Spanish explorers in this area played an important role in the rich history of Florida and the United States.

Beach Blast Off

Make sure you plan to attend the annual Beach Blast Off in Saint Augustine beach. This event was voted the Best Family New Year’s Event in Florida. The City of Saint Augustine invites families to kick off the new year in seaside style at this special event. Starting at 8:30 PM see fireworks over the Atlantic Ocean synchronized to music. This is a great family experiences come and enjoy the New Year’s party. The event starts at 4:00PM and ends at 10:00PM.

Arbor Day Event

Every year in April the city of Saint Augustine Beach celebrates Arbor Day. This event is celebrated at the Saint Augustine Beach City Hall. The events include live music, free foods, educational activities for kids and adults, and plenty of fun for all! The Arbor Day event is held annually to inspire people to plant, nurture, and trees along with their important to our ecosystem.

Exhibitors include: Bee Exhibit; Butterflies, Live Sea Creatures in Touch Tanks, Audubon Birds, Smokey the Bear, Native Plant Exhibit, Florida Fish and Wild Life, The Matanzas River Keeper, GTM NERR Ocean Display, Sea Turtle Patrol and more.

National Night Out

Every year in October at the Saint Augustine Beach Pier the city holds a National Night Out event. This annual community-building campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods a safer, and better place to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
