Located just south of Bryceville FL on US 301 and just west of Jacksonville FL in Duval County on Interstate 10 is the quasi-independent town of Baldwin FL. In 1968 when the majority of communities in Duval County consolidated with the city of Jacksonville, Baldwin, along with Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Neptune Beach, remained quasi-independent. Like the other towns, it maintains its own municipal government, but its residents vote in the Jacksonville mayoral election and vote for the Jacksonville City Council.

In 1846, the town was originally named after Mr. Thigpen, the town of Thigpen was developed along the stagecoach line that ran to Jacksonville. The town supplied horses for the stage along with shelter and food for the passengers. In 1857, the railroad was extended to Thigpen and in 1859 a second line was added. The town name was changed to Baldwin to honor Dr. Baldwin the president of the Florida Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad. This railroad started in Lake City and ran to Jacksonville through the town of Baldwin. After the arrival of the railroad a telegraphic line was built between Baldwin and Jacksonville.

During the Civil War the town of Baldwin was occupied by federal troops. During several battles the railroad tracks were destroyed and eventually the federal troops burned the town down before leaving the area. The town was rebuilt between 1865 and 1975.

Today, along the old railroad tracks that run between Baldwin and Jacksonville is the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail. This trail starts about 5 miles from downtown Jacksonville and runs along a very secluded area all the way to Baldwin.

As you bike or hike along the trail you will see a variety of wildlife such as songbirds, hawks, wild turkey, and white-tailed deer. The dense tree tops cover most of the trail and provides shade on a sunny day, in some areas it even gives the illusion of traveling through a tunnel. The trail also crosses McGirts Creek near Camp Milton, this camp is a historic site with information about the Civil War.

Baldwin has become a very peaceful bedroom community for the Jacksonville area, residents can enjoy the beautiful country side and then just have a short drive to Jacksonville for work.
