The Town of Atlantic Beach Florida is located on the North East coast of Florida just 12 miles east of Jacksonville Florida, it was incorporated in 1926 with the governor appointing Harcourt Bull as the first mayor. Atlantic Beach was once called Nilesville. The town was originally named after John Nash Niles who arrived in 1893, and purchased 120.4 acres. The town is now known as Atlantic Beach and has had a fascinating history.

Initially people came to Nilesville to race automobiles on the beach. The town once had an airport, a grand hotel where wealthy tourists arrived by train, and where large heavy artillery pieces lined the beach during World War II.

Tourists from Northern states first came to St. Augustine to escape freezing winters as early as 1821, shortly after the United States acquired Florida as a territory.

Then people began coming to Atlantic Beach by train in 1900 when Henry Flagler built the Mayport branch of his railroad and erected a station. Soon afterword arriving in the area with his railroad Flagler built the Continental Hotel. The hotel was a summer resort with 250 guest rooms. The hotel also included a dance pavilion, tennis courts and a fishing pier.

In 1913, the railroad sold most of the land to the Atlantic Beach Corporation which began paving streets, installing lights, and water and sewer lines. In that same year the Continental Hotel changed its name to the Atlantic Beach Hotel.

In 1942, the U.S. Army set up "Combat Team Camp" and installed 155-millimeter guns up and down the beach a mile apart.

Today Atlantic Beach, Florida has a population of 12,799. Atlantic Beach is less family-centric than the surrounding county with 22.24% of the households containing married families with children. The county average for households married with children is 29.41%.

One of the best activities is the north beach Art walk held once a month on the 3^rd Thursday of each month from 5 pm to 9pm.
